Red Headed Blood collected and taken.
Open mic brought a lot of new faces last week, giving it the kind of regular magic brought about whenever musical forces collide, and then choose to go on and combine musical DNA to make up something new.
What I didn't expect was that one of the performers took it all quite literally, and lent a bit of her blood to the guitar while she was wailing away in the middle of her mini-set. But like an ace, she finished off the song and cleaned up after the set. Handy thing that our general manager used to be a full time nurse!
Up this week, something blue, if not something new (Mar 15 - Mar 21):
- Monday: Diving for Air begins their "Cure for the Monday Blues" series, with the recording background gone lead guitarist Tony Lee, indy music rabble rouser bassist Koya Hisakazu, with an old hand at the House on Peel, Tunji being percussive; see below (9:30PM)
- Tuesday: Open Mic - donate your musical DNA, literally or figuratively (9:30PM)
- Wednesday: Mark Peter continues his wide-ranging keyboard, bouncing around funk and taking the occasional peek at R&B (9:30PM)
- Thursday: Latin Music shakes up with David Chala on keys and vocals (9:30PM)
- Friday: The Hong Kong Jazz Allstars meet at Fresco, with Eugene Pao, Ted Lo, Sylvain Gagnon, and Anthony Fernandes to start your weekend (9:30PM)

Air be down there, yar:
Trivia's Henchmen:
From last week:
- Q: This man voiced his displeasure in mid 2009 over United Airlines' handling of the matter of their baggage handlers smashing his Taylor 710CE guitar (in the same line as my 310CE and Chris' 410CE often featured on Open Mic nights); after being told that nothing was going to happen, he took another guitar to the test and wrote the Internet hit song (and later full triology) "United Breaks Guitars" which received over a million views on YouTube; owner Bob Taylor immediately offered him two guitars to help with his second video. What was his name?
A: Dave Carroll
- Q: Which character, based on a then popular type of Victorian era soup, said about his coursework that it included "Reeling and Writhing, of course, to begin with...and then the different branches of Arithmetic--Ambition, Distraction, Uglification and Derision" from the story of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland?
A: The Mock Turtle
And on this go around, with some WWII Pacific History inspiration:
- [Military History] Lasting some 370 days, only 7,000 of the original 100,000 troops that set out on this defining military venture made it to the eventual destination of Shaanxi during the buildup to the second world war. What was it called?
- [Heavy Industry] Referred by its commanders as Operation Z, the invasion of Pearl Harbor saw all of its original military objectives met, and the fielding by Mitsubishi and Nakajima of their long range "Zero" Carrier based fighter aircraft; while Mitsubishi is known still by its historical name, what is the former Nakajima company now called and/or which car do they make?
Go forth, and this week, kiss someone you haven't kissed before,

in refinement - program is active at the register, please mention OSS. At the moment we're only collecting information from potential applicants that think they'll be up to the (unannounced) standards based on the above. Suffice it to say, it'll be something like "verifiable nontrivial commits to projects with any license recognized by the Open Source Initiative" with the rules subject to change as we work out what seems within the right spirit. Joining does include one free geek drink in addition to the usual discount (ever taste a Blue Screen of Death?).
