Jazzified poetics and Russian ursines!
Characterization: busy early week, a calmer weekend, and while the interest waxed, the performances were rendered. I had quite a lot of fun on an unusually large open mic night, and having a moment to play with a few regular performers definitely filled my week!2
Without much ado, Jazzetry is coming up in a few hours, ahead of a latin inspired late week (May 19 - May 24):
- Monday: Carries the torch down the chronological backwaters of yesterday, of which I'll say naught else (9 veracus ante meridiem)
- Tuesday: Jazzetry fuses jazz and poetry for your consumption ahead of the regular open mic; have a look or a listen to those of you that decide to hang fear off the edge of your seat, at least for a few songs (Jazzetry: 8PM - 10PM, Open Mic: 10PM on)
- Wednesday: The Soul Crusaders led by Bob Mocarsky's classic organ with Al G on drums and Skip Moy guitar; sixties organ jazz and boogaloo are brought a modern twist (9:30PM)
- Thursday: Salsa Caliente runs with El Gordon on percussion, David Chala on vocals/keys, and Franklin Torres strumming bass and vocalize high paced Latin salsa to heat up the thunder god's day (9:30PM)
- Friday: Bebop jazz sax sensation Shoichi Chinda is back after a long hiatus to reinspire his unique style of bebop (9:30PM)
Saturday: The other Guy (Monsieur Le Claire) rock/jazz guitarist joins forces with Brazilian keyboard maestro Joao (Senhor Mascarahenas) for a high paced rendition of ritmos marcados (10PM)
- Sunday: SoHo's Sunday night sensation, "Chill out at Fresco", finds its natural home as the pros join us to unbend their usual sets for a large dose of heterogenous improv (9:30PM)
Poetically inspired jazz (and occasionally the reverse):
Trivia gave me a moment to think about that which I normally don't. The last time around:
- Q:This country, dubbed the land of silver, derives its name from the periodic table of elements for that same shiny metal; which country is it?
A: Argentina (Ag = Argentium)
- Q: This advance in cartography by the use of a cylindrical map projection caused a lot of problems due to the use of magnetic compasses by seafarers when it was first presented in 1569, though it eventually became the standard for simplifying the display of lines of constant course. What is the projection from this eponymously named Flemish inventor called?
A: The Mercator Projection (from Gerardus Mercator)
And up for the next session:
- This city, the former capital of Russia for 200 years before moving to its present home of Moscow in 1918, has the unusual airport code LED which corresponds to one of its many name changes instead of its original (and current) name; which city is it? (Bonus half drink: What was the name of the city that led to its unusual IATA code?)
- Before a series of subdivisions began in 1924, the Soviets laid claim to the long gone region of Turkestan and renamed it to the Turkestan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. Name any two of the present day countries that formerly comprised this region.
Next week we have Canadian songstress Gi Gi demonstrating her style and charisma, alongside some aside jazz in the weekend.
See you then!

- Open Source Discount Membership rules:
in refinement - program is active at the register, please mention OSS. At the moment we're only collecting information from potential applicants that think they'll be up to the (unannounced) standards based on the above. Suffice it to say, it'll be something like "verifiable nontrivial commits to projects with any license recognized by the Open Source Initiative" with the rules subject to change as we work out what seems within the right spirit. Joining does include one free geek drink in addition to the usual discount (ever taste a Blue Screen of Death?).
