Fresco News The creative creations sing but once in music, and then are gone ever more.

That doesn't keep us from putting more shows together for you every week, and this past weekend ended up having a few big nights before passing on into yester--whathaveyou. Here was the scene on Friday with Miguel, Ted, Sylvain, and Al (sorry last week, it wasn't Anthony):

We have another double header this week with jazz talent Allen Youngblood passing through town and a custom set from Peter Scherr he says he wrote especially for this performance! Here's the enumeration (Mar 16 - Mar 22):
  • Monday: Barstool Philosophy examines the tonal contrast of the additional Cantonese tones over Mandarin, and the commonplace words they generally lace (and my intermediate Cantonese exams are this and next week!) (9:30PM)
  • Tuesday: Watch the unwitting chaotic confluence of musicians finding their chords, or jump on stage and join us (10PM)
  • Wednesday: The Late Night Organ Trio led by Bob Mocarsky is back at it, with their revivalist analog synthed sounds (9:30PM)
  • Thursday: Joao orchestrates his Latin style jazz trio with a little help from his friends (9:30PM)
  • Friday: Fresco is happy to host the Allen Youngblood Quartet, with Allen's unique style of original Carribean inspired jazz, as he explores some of the raw format Fresco provides (9:30PM)
  • Saturday: Peter Scherr tells us that he has a very special combination of new music that he's put together for this show, "Charles Havtry 8 - The Deaf-Aids"; come find out what Hong Kong's best known bass player might just mean by that (10PM)
  • Sunday: Come by to hear some original improvisation and last minute dynamics as pros from around town come together to Chill Out at Fresco for impromptu jams you won't hear elsewhere (9:30PM)

Trivia and its ilk:
Last week:
  1. Q: In 2006, what man, along with his newly created bank, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in his groundbreaking work towards the creation of microcredit systems for the poor?
A: Muhammad Yunus and his Grameen Bank
  2. Q: What is the only nation in Africa to have been formerly named after a British businessman before declaring its independence in 1965 (and fully adopting its current name in 1980)?
    A: Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia)
And up on the fore, with commodities in mind:
  1. At the end of 1995, Netscape released this language, originally dubbed Mocha, in their flagship web browser in a renamed version that was widely criticized as a marketing ploy based on the similarity to another coffee language then becoming popular. What was the language called at release?
  2. Less well known than for his other exploits, this legendary value investor devised a scheme while in NYC where he started exchanging shares of stock for 80 pounds of cocoa beans per share in 1954. Who is the investor?

Next week Vicky Holmes is back for the Jazzetry show ahead of open mic, and acoustic showcase of bands on Wednesday (including me?!?) and headlines from Henry and Karissa.

'til the listserv do us part,

in refinement - program is active at the register, please mention OSS. At the moment we're only collecting information from potential applicants that think they'll be up to the (unannounced) standards based on the above. Suffice it to say, it'll be something like "verifiable nontrivial commits to projects with any license recognized by the Open Source Initiative" with the rules subject to change as we work out what seems within the right spirit. Joining does include one free geek drink in addition to the usual discount (ever taste a Blue Screen of Death?).
