Fresco News Backed tracks stack though we sometimes know jack.

The wet winds of the weekend troubled not the ardent live music listeners of Hong Kong! It was with some surprise that I walked into Fresco Saturday night to see Rickard and company performing a new mix of upbeat jazz to find a full house behind the entanglement of the new double curtain, but Carr had an Erdinger ready in short order and all was right in the world.

At least, this localized part of it ;)

A number of our favorites are back to the schtick this week, and the weekend has a few heavy hitters in store for you (Mar 9 - Mar 15):
  • Monday: Barstool Philosophy takes a critical look at modern issues in Micro-Finance-Institutions (MFIs) joining forces with the Internet (9:30PM)
  • Tuesday: The mic awaits you; are you ready to take it? Would a shot help? (9:30PM)
  • Wednesday: Bob is back with his unique organ sounds with the help of Skip and Al for revivalist tunes of the 60s (9:30PM)
  • Thursday: Latin music finds Joao, Victor, and DC to sway its progressions on the small stage (9:30PM)
  • Friday: Miguel Fernandez is back for his second showing with his sax, accompanied with heavyweights Ted Lo on keys, Sylvain Gagnon on bass, and Anthony Fernandes on drums (10PM)
  • Saturday: Eugene returns for some fast picking envisioning of Hong Kong influenced jazz, with a few friends that can keep up (10PM)
  • Sunday: Chilling out at Fresco means taking a break with a chat for the musicians, as they experiment outside of the bounds of their normal gigs around town (8PM)
  • Trivia slipped by us last week, but in the week prior, despite a few arguments involving the O.E.D., you attacked with perception:
    1. Q: The B.F. Goodrich Company originally coined this common name in 1923 to describe a new line of rubber overshoes, including a fastener, though the general idea was patented as early as 1851; what is the name / device?
      A: The zipper
    2. Q: This General from the British army wrote the manual called "Scouting for boys" in 1907, which later formed the basis for a similarly named organization shortly thereafter; what is his name?
      A: General Baden-Powell

So keeping it a bit less contentious this week, here's some new things to ponder:
    1. In 2006, what man, along with his newly created bank, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in his groundbreaking work towards the creation of microcredit systems for the poor?
    2. What is the only nation in Africa to have been formerly named after a British businessman before declaring its independence in 1965 (and fully adopting its current name in 1980)?

The future holds many things, but to find out what it has for next week, check back then,

    • Open Source Discount Membership rules:
in refinement - program is active at the register, please mention OSS. At the moment we're only collecting information from potential applicants that think they'll be up to the (unannounced) standards based on the above. Suffice it to say, it'll be something like "verifiable nontrivial commits to projects with any license recognized by the Open Source Initiative" with the rules subject to change as we work out what seems within the right spirit. Joining does include one free geek drink in addition to the usual discount (ever taste a Blue Screen of Death?).
