Peel Fresco Music Lounge Newsletter Dec 30
(Mailing list information, including unsubscription instructions,
is located at the end of this message.)
Mid holiday night's dream.
Greeting Fresco fans from the (generally) unified states! I've heard word from Rob and Joyce that big things are afoot for the next few days, including a double header of New Year's Eve and New Year's Day performances, but more on that in a moment.
Tommy Ho kept a jolly Christmas Eve performance for you last Wednesday:
While Chinda-san kept up his rousing bebop style with Yo Young, ah-Hong, and Robbin Harris on Friday:
Rounding out the week was a performance from Alex Ho with smooth moves from Joel Haggard, and ah-Hong on Saturday:
Man, what a week to be away from the scene!
Closing out 2008 has been an excellent experience with all of you, and you did not go unnoticed! We had a double whammy at the end of '08 with a big writeup in the Life section of the South China Morning Post and a vivid entry from I Love Soho, along with a kind mention during a radio segment from the revivalist Organ trio, the Soul Crusaders, reminding us of what we already knew - that jazz and live music in Hong Kong is strong, and Fresco is one of its centers. Thanks guys!
The past back where it belongs, here's a look at the last week of the year (Dec 30 - Jan 4):
- Tuesday: Here the music amateurs cut licks and entice your indie-rock soul - Open mic night continues with Rob hosting for me this week (9:30PM)
- Wednesday: New Year's Eve at last! Come help the Karissa Muse trio bring in the New Year with awesome live guitar for festive revelery; see below (10PM)
- Thursday: New Year's Day doesn't leave Fresco closed - The 60's revival wandering organ trio the Soul Crusaders return with Bob Mocarsky on organ, Paulo Levi on tenor sax, and big Al Gordon on drums; see below (9:30PM)
- Friday: Brazilian tenor sax player Paulo Levi returns for a night of contemporary and original jazz, with special guest ace guitarist Eugene Pao (9:30PM)
- Saturday: The Jim Schneider Assembly graces the stage a little later than usual, with a private function running from 8PM - 11PM, but that only leaves excellent music of this jazz trio later at night when the musicians are cooking (regular customers are welcome starting at 10:30PM)
- Sunday: Fresco continues the sensation SCMP was so happy about with the first Chill Out night of 2009; come hear music pros from around town get together for a night of improvised music (9:30PM)
The Muse for a New Year's Eve blast:
While the Soul Crusaders organize the first night of the new year:
The Generally Trivial:
To close up the 2008 questions:
- Q: While directly related to the lesser known candela, what unit of measure is generally used to describe the brightness of light as seen by a human?
A: Lumens
- Q: Having won the Time award for best invention of 2006 in its class, which new motor company incorporated in July of 2003 has recently put an all electric sports car (0-60 in 3.9 seconds) into mass production (about 6 months ago)?
A: Tesla Motors
And to rock off 2009:
- This term, coined by Richard Dawkins in 1976 refers to the propagation of pieces of ideas through complex human systems. What is the term? (Bonus: what book was it first mentioned in?)
- The 50 states of the US is a bit of a misnomer; the oddity of the uncounted Washington, DC aside, name one of the two states that are actually not states but commonwealths.
Coming in the first full week of the new year we have latin music specialist Rafael Alcantara along with HK's own Blues Master (according to the venereble HK Mag) Henry Cheung with his blues quartet and a return from the Mia Samira trio.
See you in '09!
Warm wishes (from Bosterdam),
Guy Cirino

in refinement - program is active at the register, please mention OSS. At the moment we're only collecting information from potential applicants that think they'll be up to the (unannounced) standards based on the above. Suffice it to say, it'll be something like "verifiable nontrivial commits to projects with any of the following licenses: GPLv1, GPLv2, LGPL, *BSD, ..." with the rules subject to change as we work out what seems within the right spirit. Joining does include one free geek drink in addition to the usual discount (ever taste a Blue Screen of Death?).
