Fresco News Upturns. Because it can't rain all the time.

Our very own Joyce (who's frequently Here more than There) has gone on a rant and a rave about the difference between Eastern and Western medicine... Which probably has at least something to do with recently dropping a table on her knee. The moral of the story is that she's fine (one or two massages aside), and you can drop by to give her some tender loving care, if you can manage to find out wherever she is.

(*hint* if you see her, you can probably catch her... She can't outrun you! Just don't mention that I mentioned it... :) *hint*)

Knees didn't prevent the insurmountable spirit of Ms. Baker from attending an excellent start to the holiday concert series. Or take a look for yourself:

The past back where it belongs, let's talk about the near future (Dec 8 - Dec 14):
  • Monday: The mad typist dons his hat to chronicle the upcoming week; while chill laughs trickle through the bar (Now)
  • Tuesday: Galactically Known[1] Open Mic Seeks Amateur Musicians to join in the fun! Inquire within, or drop by to hear a tune (9:30PM)
  • Wednesday: Guy LeClaire can't stay away from Hong Kong, despite his numerous gigs in Macau! Enjoy a night of jazz, funk, and groove from his smoking guitar alongside Peter Shear on bass and Robbin Harris on drums (9:30PM)
  • Thursday: Latin music continues to reign supreme on Thursdays with the Joao Mascarenhas Latin Trio; hear Joao on the keyboard, Victor Geronimo on the bass, and Fernando on the drums for a presentation of a wide variety of Latin styles (9:30PM)
  • Friday: The Rickard Malmsten Quartet presents a night of contemporary original jazz, with Jim Schneider on piano, Paulo Levi on sax, Robbin Harris on drums, and the man himself on bass (9:30PM, see below)
  • Saturday: The power duo of Hong Kong jazz is ready to throw down some of the best modern and contemporary jazz on the ticket; with backups from some of the town's best, come by to embrace the new as it happens (10PM, see below)
  • Sunday: Fresco keeps its Chill Out night exactly where it declaims; at the Fresco Chill Out Night! The hard working music pros from around town come by for a bit of improv and a drink, and the benefit is there for your taking (9:30PM)

Of Trivia, of importance, and of recent reprise:
Recently questioned:
  1. Q: Less well known as Nicholas the Wonderworker, where was St. Nicholas' bishopric?
A: St. Nicholas the Wonderworker (and the model for Santa Claus) was the Bishop of Myra; he was known for secret gift-giving, amongst other things.
  2. Q: Which of these two typographic marks are longer? An em dash or an en dash?
A: The em dash is twice as long as the en dash (based on the widths of the "m" and "n" lowercase letters, respectively)
And newly asked:
  1. While directly related to the lesser known candela, what unit of measure is generally used to describe the brightness of light as seen by a human?
  2. Having won the Time award for best invention of 2006 in its class, which new motor company incorporated in July of 2003 has recently put an all electric sports car (0-60 in 3.9 seconds) into mass production (about 6 months ago)?
Coming up soon we are proud to host Allen Youngblood, one on the cutting edge of carribean inspired music and tunes; drop by next Friday (Dec 19) to hear the jazzman melodize on his piano, with a renowned band backing him up.

Another quick mention, even in hard times like these, those less fortunate have some times that can be harder; take a moment to look through your old wardrobes for some warm coats and clothes and drop them off at the bar if you have a chance, and we'll see about getting them to Sichuan where things were hit pretty hard.

Having a merry,

in refinement - program is active at the register, please mention OSS. At the moment we're only collecting information from potential applicants that think they'll be up to the (unannounced) standards based on the above. Suffice it to say, it'll be something like "verifiable nontrivial commits to projects with any of the following licenses: GPLv1, GPLv2, LGPL, *BSD, ..." with the rules subject to change as we work out what seems within the right spirit. Joining does include one free geek drink in addition to the usual discount (ever taste a Blue Screen of Death?).
