Fresco News Tinsel ring and green bell bling!

Christmas[1] is upon us, and merchandise is rolling off the shelves! Well, perhaps "rolling" isn't the right word in a "diminuitively increasingly constrained" economy (fine, "down"), but fortunately holiday spirit can be as plentiful a commodity as we choose to make it. Go out and kiss someone![2]

We're tooling up to wind down 2008, and the international jazz fest in HK can be described as awesome. Eight nights of music in a row led to.. Well, at least a few saxen:
Three Saxen at Fresco
And Jezrael leading some tunes:

Thank you performers for making an excellent week, and of course, the best to you for dropping by to give them a reason to play!

Here's a look at what's up this week (Dec 1 - Dec 7):
  • Monday: Exercise caution, as relaxed discussion and an insane host may entertain you (9PM)
  • Tuesday: Become one of the growing number of amateur talent that show up at Fresco's Open Mic to showcase their wares (and welcome back the Legendary Man of Paris, Benoit)(9:30PM)
  • Wednesday: Bob Mocarsky brings some friends to handle this week's Wednesday night residency; hear what this San Fransiscan does best with his Organ Trio (9:30PM)
  • Thursday: Brazilian master pianist Joan Mascarenhas presents a variety of Latin music styles in his new trio (9:30PM)
  • Friday: We officially begin our Holiday Concert series with tenor saxophonist Paulo Levi along with Hong Kong's jazz all-stars with Eugene Pao on guitar, Ted Lo on piano, Angelita Lee on vocals and Robbin Harris on drums. We'd also like to welcome Brazilian bassist Sergio Brandoo to round out the sound (10PM)
  • Saturday: Jason Ho returns with Red Taurus for a night of Latin/jazz fusion; Jason Ho is on guitar, Benny Inot has the sax, Junior Carpio strums the bass, and Johnny Abraham is striking the drums (10pm)
  • Sunday: Hong Kong's jazz musos get creative, you reap the rewards; "Chill Out at Fresco" stars rotating hosts, the sonorous music, and spontaneity that can't be scored if we broke out the music rolls and tried (9:30PM)
The Holiday Kick Off Concert with the all-stars:
Holiday Concert Series at Fresco, Starting Dec 3, 2008
Way back when, I asked the following two trivia questions; here they are with the answers (though the winners, I suppose, already know that they won ;) ):
  1. Q: The use of acoustics in navigation and ranging (SONAR) generally applies to RADAR-like use of sound waves underwater. When this technology is brought above water for atmospheric uses, what is it commonly called?
A: SODAR (SOnic Detection And Ranging)
  2. Q: This activist group in Boston, Lincolnshire, UK wishes to preserve the correct use of a particular punctuation mark in the English language, generally written as a curved single quote. What is the activist group called?
A: The Apostrophe Protection Society (amended by the Society for the Advanced Use of the Apostrophe)
And to chew on for December:
  1. Less well known as Nicholas the Wonderworker, where was St. Nicholas' bishopric?
  2. Which of these two typographic marks are longer? An em dash or an en dash?
Next week the power duo of Pao and Lo return for a Saturday night performance, with Rickard and Joao taking Friday and Thursday, respectively.

After a quick survey of how Sichuan has been doing since the devastating earthquake, Fresco will be collecting coats and other warm (but still wearable!) winter clothing with the help of one of our members, Elaine Leung. If you haven't already, please take a look through your wardrobes for any coats or other winter clothes that you were thinking about parting ways with, and drop them off at the bar; and for the trouble, take 10% off your next bill ;) More details will be available shortly on the website and in the Peel Fresco Music Lounge Regulars Facebook group.

Warm wishes,
Guy Cirino
Chief Bacchanalian Officer

along with:
Joyce Baker
Chief of Art and Design

[1] and other year end holidays too! [*cough* kwanza *cough*]
[2] Please attempt to use some discretion and judgement; this isn't college...

  • Open Source Discount Membership rules:
in refinement - program is active at the register, please mention OSS. At the moment we're only collecting information from potential applicants that think they'll be up to the (unannounced) standards based on the above. Suffice it to say, it'll be something like "verifiable nontrivial commits to projects with any of the following licenses: GPLv1, GPLv2, LGPL, *BSD, ..." with the rules subject to change as we work out what seems within the right spirit. Joining does include one free geek drink in addition to the usual discount (ever taste a Blue Screen of Death?).
