Peel Fresco Music Lounge Newsletter Oct 28
(Mailing list information, including unsubscription instructions,
is located at the end of this message.)
Greetings!
I'd like to thank Rob for writing the newsletter the last few weeks, much as he said in the last issue, I probably did need a blood transfusion, and certainly know that I could do with a solid week or two of sleep! This being Hong Kong and all, I suppose I might as well wish for pigs to fly as well..
(Wait.. is it still the year of the-- ahh, forget it!)
It is with momentous news barely contained between the fingers and the keyboard that I write to you again, with Fresco leaving the days of counting its age in months and rolling into years with the big one year anniversary sneaking on the horizon! What an amazing year it has been, going from a Hong Kong with few live music venues outside of the hotels and later-night establishments to an SAR with six nights of live music a week, and several new places shuffling around musicians! Thinking back over the place I first visited, what an amazing change to contemplate!
(Which, of course, means "party" in various languages ;) Come on, I am the Chief Bacchanalian Officer...)
Here at the bar we have already begun the anniversary with a rememberance of our first steps dating back 365 days from our soft opening; now we've taken our first steps and want to recount what it was like when we really opened our doors and started becoming a full time live music bar - next week will be a party to remember, for now, just sit tight, and know that it's coming. Soon. Like Nov 7 soon.
Here's the scene last week:
Momentous talks aside, here's our last week before rolling over the books and battening down the hatches (Oct 27 - Nov 2):
- Monday: The Secret of SoHo takes root in its unofficial acoustic set (9PM)
- Tuesday: Hong Kong's free-est (liberty, not beer) open mic / open jam night rocks on - drop by and grab the mic, or enjoy our new tap brews and other libations for a night (9:30PM)
- Wednesday: John Hutton and friends bring their flair to a taste of the country and the catchiness of folklore in their own unique way (9:30PM)
- Thursday: Chinda-san takes the bebop sax right out of Japan to our stage, joined by Yuko-san on piano and Jr. Carpio on bass (9:30PM)
- Friday: Rickard's Second Generation, original and innovative contemporary jazz kicks off with Rickard Malmsten on bass, Miles Li on sax, Wilson Lam on guitar, and Al Gordon on drums (9:30PM)
- Saturday: For a change from the norm, Fresco hosts a Celtic night with Bahouki; John Hutton is back on guitar and vocals, Oliver Quinn plucks and fingers the mandolin and flute, and David May raises the violin for a night of soul stirring Celtic folk songs (10PM)
- Sunday: The after hours of Hong Kong's pros return for another Chill Out at Fresco night, for our latest installment. Come hear the musos from around town kick it improv style, while we treat them to our best drink discount to help make the music flow (8PM/late)
The Second Gen:

A Trivial Nonce:
From the recent archives:
- Q: This opposite of "the learning curve" was originally discovered by Hermann Ebbinghaus in 1885, and recent memorization aid software like Mnemosyne makes use of it to help you remember things quicker; which curve is it?
A: The Forgetting Curve in his work Über das Gedächtnis
- Q: This current president of Georgia has been in the news a lot lately regarding recent events with Russia; what is his name?
A: Mikheil Saakashvili (მიხეილ სააკაშვილი)
And for your mental exercise:
- The use of acoustics in navigation and ranging (SONAR) generally applies to RADAR-like use of sound waves underwater. When this technology is brought above water for atmospheric uses, what is it commonly called?
- This activist group in Boston, Lincolnshire, UK wishes to preserve the correct use of a particular punctuation mark in the English language, generally written as a curved single quote. What is the activist group called?
While we have a full array of music for you next week (and the Hong Kong jazz festival with an unprecedented week of HK live jazz after that!) our big news is the one year anniversary of our hard-opening. Don't miss it!
With indubitable benignance,
Guy Cirino

in refinement - program is active at the register, please mention OSS. At the moment we're only collecting information from potential applicants that think they'll be up to the (unannounced) standards based on the above. Suffice it to say, it'll be something like "verifiable nontrivial commits to projects with any of the following licenses: GPLv1, GPLv2, LGPL, *BSD, ..." with the rules subject to change as we work out what seems within the right spirit. Joining does include one free geek drink in addition to the usual discount (ever taste a Blue Screen of Death?).
