Typhoon... this!

(Yup, it's true, we're open for a Typhoon Jam Night tonight! More on that later, I have to tell you about last week first!)

Hello everybody! The allstars rocked the house last week, the second generation Malmsten trio cleaned up Friday, and Mocarsky and Skip threw down some fast jazz organ for your Thursday night entertainment. Here's a look at the Sunday night chill-out scene with Bill Hied and a few keyboards:

With your help, we did it again! Hong Kong Magazine still thinks we're one of the "Best Bars for Live Music" and a "bastion of bohemian cool" - check out this clip from this week's edition:

Aside from being open despite the T8 tonight, here's the week's news (Sep 23 - Sep 28):
  • Tuesday: Typhoon Jam, sponsored by Mother Nature! Come join us as the weather gains its unreality for a night of improv music and the pre-pros grinding it out, or join us on stage (9:30PM)
  • Wednesday: The Destruction brings a few Friends to the party as El Destroyo carries on its biweekly residency of surfer rockabilly with a few special guests (9:30PM)
  • Thursday: Steve Cray joins Red Star Rising for an experimental blend of folk and rock music in a not-to-miss original performance (9:30PM)
  • Friday: Classic jazz standards meet HK's favorite female jazz guitarist when the Karissa Muse Trio returns (9:30PM)
  • Saturday: Joves Fuego Trio takes an original tilt on jazzed up folk with guitarist Joves Fuego, bassist Chris Collins, and drummer Mike Salcedo (9:30PM)
  • Sunday: Chill out night; come hear some of the pros from around HK unwind with our deepest drink discount; edgy improvised jams every week (8:30PM)
Or for the more visually font-centric of you:
The Last week of September at Fresco

The Trivial and Not So Trivial Thought of the Week:
Last week:
  1. Q: The computer term "byte" has always had a problem with its agreed upon definition. When specifying a unit of 8 bits, what term is normally used instead?
A: Octet. "Byte" is actually a "convenient sized collection of bits", though usually 8.
  2. Q: Kevin Flynn was a programmer at what company in the 1982 film "Tron"?
    A: Encon
And for current contemplation (and answering!):
  1. This opposite of "the learning curve" was originally discovered by Hermann Ebbinghaus in 1885, and recent memorization aid software like Mnemosyne makes use of it to help you remember things quicker; which curve is it?
  2. This current president of Georgia has been in the news a lot lately regarding recent events with Russia; what is his name?
Coming up next week we have the start of the Mocarsky biweekly wednesday night residency, the return of the Tommy Ho trio, and a banjo / mandolin visit from the Curs.

  • Open Source Discount Membership rules:
in refinement - program is active at the register, please mention OSS. At the moment we're only collecting information from potential applicants that think they'll be up to the (unannounced) standards based on the above. Suffice it to say, it'll be something like "verifiable nontrivial commits to projects with any of the following licenses: GPLv1, GPLv2, LGPL, *BSD, ..." with the rules subject to change as we work out what seems within the right spirit. Joining does include one free geek drink in addition to the usual discount (ever taste a Blue Screen of Death?).
