I bless the rains down in Africa.
The connectivity nightmare seems past, and I'm writing to you again, this time from a link that seems to handle more than 2k before cutting out. Techery aside, my people tell me it was nice having the classic jazz of the Tommy Ho Trio last Thursday, but the double header of El Destroyo throwing down their surfer/rockabilly riffs with the Curs last Friday and then the Charlie Huntley Quartet taking care of some contemporary jazz standards left quite a mark! Here's a duotych of the nights:
Our chill night in progress now for those who enjoyed unwinding to the musical creativity of some of HK's pros, it's time to think thoughts of next week (Jul 28 - Aug 3):
- Monday: One inquires to what one doesn't know. But the secret knows itself, and thus knows all; see what it might reveal, or just take it slow with the rest of us (9:30PM)
- Tuesday: Fresco hosts open mic - for those that dare to play, or want to know where the bar for daring is these days (9:30PM)
- Wednesday: The Destroyers are back, for some El Destruction on their biweekly residency; come hang with Dean, Maggie, and Tunji for some rockabilly and other fast picking riffs (9PM)
- Thursday: The Glad Lowe Project keeps on keeping on; enjoy a night of soulful blues and pop delivered from the appetitive to excitate your inner tingle (9PM)
- Friday: Singer Joses Liu, bassist Justin Sui, and pianist John Inot return as the Joses Liu Trio to bring us their version of jazz to escalate your Friday night (9:30PM)
- Saturday: Jason Ho latinizes jazz with Red Taurus, for a night of originals and standards with some tropic and southern hemispheric mix (9:30PM)
- Sunday: Our weekly respite to close up the week brings some of HK's tonal instigators - come hear some of the best of HK begin with the common standards vocabulary and explore to wherever whim may take them (9PM)
The Glad and the Lowe, with the Liu somewhere close:
And the fused Latin Jazz style of Jason and Red Taurus:
Some thoughts about Trivia:
First some review:
- Q: To which Greek god was Aphrodite married?
A: Hephaestus
- Q: Who said "For when we three threw the lots I received the grey sea as my abode, Hades drew the murky darkness, Zeus, however drew the wide sky of brightness and clouds; the earth is common to all, and spacious Olympus"?
A: Poseidon, in the Iliad
And for this week:
- What did Bilbo Baggins have in his pocket when he battled his infamous trivia duel with Gollum?
- If three points are in an exact line (assuming regular Euclidean geometry) what are they called?
As for next week, we have the Miles Li trio including Mr. Li on sax with Wilson Lam on guitar Friday night (Aug 8), and guitarist Eugene Pao with some new material joined by Bob Mocarsky on organ and Joel Haggard on drums on Saturday night (Aug 9).
