Fresco News
Rain, rain, go away, and if you come back, we'll play anyway.

Record rainfall fails to deter the musicrati! Despite centennial records of rainfall, clogged gutters, and a couple feet of water on the freeway, music proved your life essence as you came to hear Pete Moore wail away with Guy LeClaire for a night of Oz at Fresco, and a night so Chill last Sunday that the dim sum place across the street (which opens at 4:30AM *cough* *hack*) served you breakfast after a night filled with improvised creativity. Cheers to all of you!

And check it out!! We made the paper (well, as long as they keep printing HK Magazine on paper...):
Fresco is one of the Best Jazz Joints according to HK Mag

Not to wane spirit from its muse, we've stocked up the week for you once more. I'm sad to say that I've taken on a new job after leaving the ranks of Yahoo and will be going away for a month (but still writing your Fresco News in absentia!), so it's off to the land of the Rising Sun for a month of training.. And like all good leavings, that means a party.

But in the meantime, we've got some wine and tune coming for you to wash away your woes (Jun 9 - Jun 15):
  • Monday: Off the flight and into the secret night, thanks for dropping by!
  • Tuesday: Phil Kennedy leaves our ranks to go on drumming in the States United; jam on! Check out our sister Open Mics with Bruno Loriot @ Natura Cafe in East Orlando or Maggie Lee @ Tatame in Winter Park (9:30PM)
  • Wednesday: Ah Hong carries on his frenetic bass with Ted Lo on drums and Bob Mocarsky on piano for some funk, jazz, and groove (9PM)
  • Thursday: Fermented grapes from the land down under assuage our tastebuds with this month's wine tasting sponsored by Jebsen & Co. House player Jim Schneider will accompany your appetites with his blend of soft jazz on piano and sax, see below (7:30PM)
  • Friday: 2G Malmsten returns with the man himself, Melchior, Lam, and Li for some jazz standards and classic jazz, and I'm throwing a get-hired / going away double header later on in the night (9:30PM)
  • Saturday: The Tommy Ho Trio returns with Justin on double bass and Hassan on drums, along with a special guest so special that we can't tell you their name, see below (9:30PM)
  • Sunday: Our own Chief of Art and Design is hosting this Sunday's Chill Out at Fresco night (personally, I think it was the dim sum that really got her..); come hear some of the pros of HK musically unwind (8PM)

Your weekly trivia fix:
The past blend of mythos and fantasy left you prepped and ready to go; thanks for the responses guys, and don't forget to pick up your drinks within a month!
  1. Q: How many rings were given to "mortal men doomed to die"?
    A: 9.
  2. Q: "Tuesday" takes its name originally from which Norse god of single combat?
    A: Týr.
And the new:
  1. While Beijing may be referred to as "the northern capital", which city within a thousand miles or so may be referred to as "the eastern capital", borrowing the original meanings of their names?
  2. Most time zones in the world are whole number differences from the Greenwich Mean (IE GMT +8 hours for us); name a country containing a timezone that isn't a whole number difference.
Coming up next Thursday (Jun 19), top jazz pianist Ted Lo will put the sticks down for a bit and play some piano with Rickard Malmsten and Joel Haggard, while Friday (Jun 20) we're glad to welcome the Karissa Muse Trio for a mix of jazz standards and original jazz compositions.

Just as a preview, I'm working out the details for what I think is a first-of-its-kind special. As a Free and Open Source powered bar (yup, we run Gentoo Linux in the back and on our servers), I'd like to give something back to the community; Fresco will soon be offering a discount to the hard working contributors of Open Source Software! These people donate some of their desire, creativity and hard work to making software and media for the world, with such top notch pieces such as the Firefox web browser, Gnumeric, or the Gentoo Linux distribution (among too many others to mention in a line). For those of you who have contributed, please email me here at info@peelfresco.com with a URL to a public project (the exact set of accepted licenses will be forthcoming) where you are mentioned in the credits, version cont rol system, or other such indicators to show that you have contributed to an open source project and I'll send you the info that you need to get a discount off all your drinks at Fresco.

If you're interested in the open source software / creative commons revolution, feel free to look here:
peelfresco.com/oss.

Or get involved! There are more projects than you can shake a stick at according to Ohloh and Google Code, and you don't have to be a programmer to lend a spare minute or two and make the world a better place. Some ideas for places to start are on our OSS pages. Let's take some of the virtual out of the old Virtual Beer ;) Oh and Linus & Alan, if you drop by, your round is on me..

Joyce Baker

    4. This may not be combined with other offers.
    5. The bartender or server may request to see photo ID if they do not recognize you.

  • Open Source Discount Membership rules:
TBD. At the moment we're only collecting information from potential applicants that think they'll be up to the (unannounced) standards based on the above. Suffice it to say, it'll be something like "verifiable nontrivial commits to projects with any of the following licenses: GPLv1, GPLv2, LGPL, *BSD, ..." with the rules subject to change as we work out what seems within the right spirit.
