Chill.. seems to lead to creativity.
Sunday turned to be the sort of night we dreamed about when the inspiration struck to put together a night to chill out; Jim Schneider and Kevin Guffy were hosting when a war of musicians with more factions than World War I descended on the place - we counted Ted Lo, A Hong, Ambrose Lo, Nick McBride, Larry Hamon and Mark Peter among the prosecutors, and the way their respective musical styles interplayed will leave a mark in our minds as to what it can be when the music pros decide to mess around and see what happens. The Rickard Malmsten trio with Ted Lo and Joel Haggard last Thursday and the Eugene Pao / Ted Lo duo all put in solid performances as well. Hats off, guys!
Here's a quick shot from last week's Malmsten trio:
While I can quietly confess my happiness that Microsoft backed off from acquiring Yahoo and squashing deep purple within soylent green, here's some items that might be of interest (May 5 - May 11):
- Monday: A Möbius strip wraps around a parsnip; though the black cat keeps changing colors - the secret unfolds (10PM)
- Tuesday: Fresco's open mic brings you the chance to show people your stuff, or to hear me and the rest of 'em engage your cheers (10PM)
- Wednesday: Never a dull moment obscures the Guy LeClaire trio; listen to his smoking guitar with the help of a few friends (9PM)
- Thursday: This month's Wine Tasting features a selection of all French Wine's for French May; enjoy these 5 with matched cheeses and some live piano music to round things out, see below (7:30PM)
- Friday: Rickard Malmsten's Second Generation Trio starts off with Wilson Lam on guitar, Ted Lo on drums, and Miles Li on alto saxophone, details below (9:30PM)
- Saturday: Jim Schneider on piano returns with Kevin Guffy on guitar for a mix of soul reaching blues and R&B (9:30PM)
- Sunday: Our Fresco Chill out night continues with this week's host Rob Pravendar of Bone Table joined by Green Mist, in town this weekend before starting their European tour; hear them online at http://www.myspace.com/themysteriousgreenmist (8PM)
The second Thursday of the month brings our Wine tasting:
And the second coming of the Malmsten Trio:
For matters more trivial:
So perhaps we all need to brush up on our Han characters a tad; wiseassery aside, here's the answers.
- Q: How many strokes are there in the traditional (IE non-simplified) version of the "dragon" character (long)?
A: 16 (Trick question follow on.. It is radical 212, not to be decomposed)
- Q: What character (traditional or simplified) has the fewest number of strokes of any Chinese character (no no, don't be naughty - punctuation doesn't count)?
A: (It should have said "characters .. have") I was able to find 6, but a drink to anyone who finds one not listed. One stroke: 一 (Yat1), 丨 (kwan2), 丶 (jyu2), 丿 (pit3), 乙 (yut6), 亅 (kyut3)
This week's trivia is more dystopian inspired:
- In what ministry is Winston captured and eventually taken to room 101?
- What is the name of Guy Montag's Chief? (perhaps I should crosspost this to the Facebook group "Guy's named guy")
On a more utopian note, Shoichi Chinda brings his sax to play along with Kayoko Haruta's Piano and A Hong's bass next Thursday (May 15), while the following day Bone Table returns in full force with a new dose of country rock and dirty blues, Hong Kong'ed up a bit.
