With nonverbal salutations do you welcomed should be.
Faux machine translation aside, Mia Samira and Ela Alegre teamed up with Dan LaValle and Mike Carr for a powerfully emotive mix of acoustic jazz with some flamenco inspired scales thrown in for good measure. Or, see for yourself:
While we're hoping Facebook doesn't block us for something like discussing the upcoming Olympics, it has been hard to walk around Hong Kong and not see some sign of the coming games (along with the constant barrage of proclaimed "readiness" which ought to be interesting to see later this year). With that said, here's a list of what's coming with absolutely nothing Olympic involved (except possibly how many Hoegaardens I plan on consuming this Wednesday night) (Apr 28 - May 4):
- Monday: The torch passes through the strangely curved manifold protecting Hong Kong's worst kept secret (10PM)
- Tuesday: Which is better - A Penny for your Thoughts or a Shot for your Tunes? Come play or heckle alongside the best of 'em (10PM)
- Wednesday: The Thespians attack! Come hear the music of Guy LeClaire as the cast party for Macbeth mix up their notions of Foul and Fair (Music: 9PM, Party: 10:30PM)
- Thursday: The Rickard Malmsten trio features Ted Lo on Piano and Joel Haggard on drums, for a night of soft jazz favorites and mercurial delights, see below (9PM)
- Friday: The Jim Schneider Assembly returns for a night of jazz and R&B (9:30PM)
- Saturday: Ted Lo steps back to the drum kit while Eugene Pao once more takes up his wicked guitar; admission of $120 includes one drink, see below (10PM, seating is limited so please reserve or arrive early)
- Sunday: We roll out the red carpet for Hong Kong's professional musicians; come Chill Out with us here, while we treat the pros to our deepest drink discount to hear what they create (8PM)

Trivial Matters:
The techno- and gene- philes were few and far between last week, but thanks to everybody who participated and winners, don't forget to swing by to collect your drinks before the 30 days runs out!
- Q: Before HD TV, what television standard was (and still is) used to broadcast signals in the US?
A: NTSC
- Q: It had been believed until recently that there was a strong connection between the number of genes and the intelligence of the organism. What living cell was discovered in the past decade to contain more gene pairs than humans?
A: Wheat
This week's questions were inspired by the traditional way of writing Chinese characters that surrounds us in HK:
- How many strokes are there in the traditional (IE non-simplified) version of the "dragon" character (long)?
- What character (traditional or simplified) has the fewest number of strokes of any Chinese character (no no, don't be naughty - punctuation doesn't count)?
Simmering on the boiler for next week, we took a cue from the French consulate for their month long series of events dubbed "French May", and styled our wine selections entirely on their people's vineyards. Also Rickard brings us the second generation of his group with himself on bass, Wilson Lam on guitar, Ted Lo on drums, and Miles Li on alto sax.
