Fresco News
The early part of the week is the only time to rest, it seems.

We want to thank you for keeping us extra busy last week, with a triple header of the Shoichi / Kayoko duet, the Glad-Lowe Project, and the Kevin Guffy trio. The performances were stellar guys, and the Chill Out respite we found on Sunday evening proved itself to be sweet surrender before the hard hitting business of Monday was able to knock us back into the swing of things.

We have a busy week ahead of us; once again HK's top jazz guys, Eugene Pao and Ted Lo return with A Hong to replace our common jazz sensibilities with something a bit more dazzling, and we have the pleasure of hosting our first charity concert this Friday for the Rubina Hope for the Kids Jamboree (details below).

In a more itemized form:
  • Monday: The secret gains a new twist with the introduction of the Looking Glass; or see it for yourself (9:30PM)
  • Tuesday: The indie and amateur (and a couple of the pros on the DL) musicians of HK band together - for the best open mic in town. A free shot to the performers for their musicality (10PM)
  • Wednesday: The funked over grooved up smoking jazz and rock tunes of the Guy LeClaire trio will assuage your ennui (9PM)
  • Thursday: Fresco presents The Boutique Wines; continuing our wine and cheese tasting series, we will be featuring some new choices alongside some old favorites with the solo guitar of Guy LeClaire; see below (Wine & Cheese: 7:30PM, Music: 9PM)
  • Friday: The Tommy Ho trio accompanies the Fresco - Rubina Hope for the Kids charity event; a suggested donation of 100HKD or more at the door includes a free drink and 10% off your tab for the rest of the night, see below (9:05PM)
  • Saturday: Eugene Pao embraces his guitar with Ted Lo commanding the drums and A Hong on bass for a second unbelievable night of their jazz on the Music Street tour; reservations advised, admission of 100HKD includes a drink (9:30PM)
  • Sunday: Chill Out night continues, closing up the weekend with some of the hard working musicians of HK; musicians receive a manager's discount for the effort, and there's a different host each week (8PM)

Given a recent chance to try to do something charitable for the community, Peel Fresco Music Lounge would like to welcome the Rubina Hope for the Kids Jamboree and concert this Friday. This program (information at http://www.hopeforkids.ca/ ) was formed after the tsunami / earthquake disasters of late 2004 in an effort to help children and parents with schooling and daycare facility construction and support. Along with event coordinator and organization cofounder Michael Lang, we have a night of music planned with the Tommy Ho trio, complimented by some quips from a few of the guys over at Take Out Comedy. In addition to helping to support this work, we would like to give you a free drink and 10% off your bill for any donation over 100HKD. Entry is free, and the donation isn't required for you to enjoy the music and get some laughs. Here's the flyer:

After a sell out show a few weeks ago, powerhouse jazz duo Eugene Pao on guitar and Ted Lo on drums are accompanied by A Hong on bass for another night of some of the best music you can find in HK; here's the details:

Coming up next week, we have HK upbeat swing inspired band El Destroyo along with the Monkey Mountain String Band with special guest the Swinging Haymakers; more on that in the next newsletter.

And of course, your weekly dose of trivia (the winners were not particularly fond of showing up on the small screen, so we'll just stick to the questions and answers from now on):

Last week's questions:
  1. Q: A percent ("%") is 1/100th, indicating a fractional value; what do you call 1/1000th?
    A: a "mil".
  2. Q: What two languages (or writing systems) were connected by the original Rosetta Stone?
A: Egyptian (hieroglyphic and demotic) and Greek
This week's questions, of a slightly musical theme:

  2. What musical notational device is used to denote a strong sudden emphasis before returning to the original dynamic?
E con brio,
Guy Cirino
Chief Bacchanalian Officer

With the harmonious monks:
Joyce Baker

Rob Baker

  • Trivia contest rules:

    3. Free drinks cannot be redeemed for cash, exchanged, or refunded.
    4. This may not be combined with other offers.
    5. The bartender or server may request to see photo ID if they do not recognize you.

    8. Employees of Fresco are not eligible contestants.
    9. Contestants may win no more than once in any four consecutive contests.
    10. Answers must be deemed correct as judged by Peel Fresco Music Lounge staff conducting the contest.
  • How did Pacific Coffee get to have "the Perfect cup"? We probably went about our superlative selection process in approximately the same fashion.
